What Is Ollama? Local AI Setup

The short answer to what Ollama is: a free tool for running large language models on your own computer. For those who want AI without sending data out, it's the most practical path in 2026; this is how we added local model support to our MultiPack platform.

Why Local Models?

Three reasons: privacy (code and documents never leave the device), cost (no API fees) and offline work. The downside is hardware: 16 GB RAM is comfortable for 7–8B models; bigger models want a GPU.

Setup and First Model

Setup is one command; then pull a model and run it. Turkish performance varies by model; current 8B-class models handle daily chat and code help fine.

LM Studio Alternative

For those who want a GUI, LM Studio does the same job point-and-click. Ollama is terminal/API heavy — ideal for embedding into apps. We support both; the user chooses.

Embedding Into Apps

Ollama serves an OpenAI-compatible local API: usually changing the base URL in existing code is enough. Streaming responses and timeout handling are mandatory in production. If no model exists, graceful degrade (falling back to cloud) is good practice.

Limits and Realistic Expectations

Local models can't catch cloud giants on deep reasoning tasks; but they are more than enough for summarizing, classification, drafting and code completion.

FAQ

Which computer is enough? A current laptop with 16 GB RAM is ideal to start.

Usable in commercial projects? Check the model license; most open models allow commercial use.
