Publishing an app on Google Play looks intimidating at first glance, but for a team that knows the steps it is a clear 1–2 week job. We collected every stage we went through publishing our own app, Swipe Words, on the Play Store.

1. Google Play Console Account
First, open a developer account for $25. Individual accounts require identity verification and phone confirmation; under post-2023 rules, new individual accounts must run a closed test before release. We tested our app with an internal test group first and collected crash reports.
2. App Bundle: AAB Format
Google Play requires AAB (Android App Bundle), not APK. Back up your signing key (keystore) from day one — lose it and the app can never be updated. The version code must increase with every upload.
3. Store Listing: Visuals and Text
Icon (512x512), feature graphic (1024x500), at least 2 screenshots, plus short (80 chars) and full descriptions are mandatory. The first 2 sentences of the description matter for search: keywords should appear naturally. We put "learn English vocabulary" up front.
4. Content Rating and Privacy
Fill in the rating questionnaire, and declare data safety completely: what data is collected, is it encrypted, can it be deleted? Ads and in-app purchases need extra declarations. Incomplete declarations are the most common reason for rejection.
5. Review and Launch
First review takes 3–7 days. Rejections arrive by email with reasons; fix and resubmit. After launch, monitor ANR and crash reports in Play Console. We shipped 3 updates in the first month.
